Thomas R. White

Thomas R. White, 93, died Wednesday, August 15, 2012 under the care of Hospice Savannah.

Mr. White was born in Newport News, VA on April 1, 1919, the son of the late Clifford Ray and Sarah Forrest "Sadie" White. He was a graduate of Warwick High School in Virginia and continued his formal education at Virginia Tech where he earned a degree in Industrial Engineering. He was a veteran of the United States Army where he served in the Pacific during World War II and was honorably discharged at the rank of Major. Tom worked for many years with General Electric where he retired in 1986 as an engineer in industrial sales. Over the course of his career, his residences included Lynn, MA, Schenectady, NY, Baltimore, MD, Roanoke, VA, Kingsport, TN and ultimately retired to The Landings in Savannah, GA.

Tom loved golf, gardening, reading, and traveling, but most of all he loved his family. While a member of the Skidaway Island Presbyterian Church, he served as Elder. He was both a member and board member of the Landings Association. As a member of the Southside Fire Department for 25 years, he served as the President of the board twice as well as volunteering as a fireman and first responder. He also served as President of the Rotary Club in Kingsport, TN and also as the District Governor for the eastern region of Tennessee. Tom was the District Commissioner of the East Tennessee, Sequoyah Council, Boy Scouts of America. Tom became certified as a Master Gardener and was a member of both the Rose Society and the Camellia Society.

In addition to his parents, Tom was preceded in death by Virginia Hare White, his wife of 47 years; his sister, Mary Frances Smith; his brother, Ray White; and grandson, Brandon Thomas Piercy. He is survived by his wife, Hazel Brown White; children, Suzanne Ed Barels, Nancy Bill vonHedemann, Richard Ruth White and Cynthia Priest; step-children, Sharon Smith, Mike Brenda Smith, Joanne John Golden and Charles Janet Brown; 6 grandchildren; 6 step-grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren as well as a host of nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held Monday, August 20, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. at Skidaway Island Presbyterian Church.
